The sallows are in a parlous state both in Fermyn and neighbouring woods, such as Bearshanks. Most are heavily infested, with great globules of "spit" and the leaves are wilting. If you stand under one of the heavily-infected sallows, you get "rained" upon by large drops of liquid coming from the infected branches. I have no idea if this is sap or just the build-up of "spit". With so many of the sallows defoliated, it cannot be good news for the purple emperor in this, its stronghold? I live nearby (Wadenhoe) so I have seen the alarming spread of this disease this year in m,y locality. Advice, please! David Phillips
