I Visited Fermyn Woods from 7th to 9th July and despite the poor weather Purple Emperors were down and showing well. I only saw 5 on Thursday, but this was into double figures. by Friday and Saturday. I was privileged to be booted, and rucksacked by HIM. The 2 main highlights were to have a personal 'one to one' with HIM on Saturday as I was 'coated' eyeball to eyeball on the lapel for 20 minutes with no one else in sight. The other was to see 4 males down together. I saw one female floating over on Saturday. Could be massive!

Many thanks for sharing Mike. I did a recy last week so can you advice whether the main ride from the aerodrome or Lady Wood is the best for them down? Thanks as I intend to have another go on Wednesday. Will be my 57th! Cheers, mark markjonesbrack@me.com
Over my three visits, I would say Lady Wood is the best place. Unfortunately cars go up and down the track from time to time, which can spoil the perfect purple moment. On Saturday a convoy of 5 off road type motorbikes zoomed up the track which as far as I know is illegal. Generally though they seem to come down throughout the day, but mid-morning to early afternoon was when I found them most approachable.
Regards
Mike
Just had a fine weekend visiting Fermyn, the highlight being Sunday 10th when my wife and i witnessed 6 fine males on the ground together in an area no more than 4 square meters in total! would have had to have used my wide angle lens to get them all in!
Am intending to visit the woods for the first time on 16th July. Could someone please give me some tips about where to park and the best viewing locations? A map (or link to one) would be really useful.
Thanks, David.
I second that request 😊 I can see on a map where lady's wood is but not sure how to get to it so any help would be appreciated please x
The best thing to do is park opposite the gliding club at the main Fermyn Wood entrance on Harley Way and then walk through the main track and continue past the open field and into the next wood which is Lady Wood. The Emperors are mainly seen here, but they can been seen anywhere from the entrance onwards.
Is that the main carpark with the children's playground that you walk past at the start of the walk?
I think i might pay a visit this afternoon as the weather looks promising! Hope I don't get lost haha
