I'd like to be able to report on a dramatic day at Knepp Wildlands, rivalling recent doings in Fermyn Woods, but the truth is that today was Hard Work, not least because of the weather: long dull spells punctuated by pleasant sunny intervals, but with a nasty wind that picked up badly as the day wore on.
I managed to see only 22 males, all of which seemed to be in good or fair condition. Completely absent from the day was Herself, and I spent hours searching for her. Like the Ent wives in The Lord of the Rings, the Empress has gone missing...
