Led a large group to look for Purple Emperors today around the Bridgewater Monument on NT's Ashridge Estate in the N Chilterns (this bit is in Herts, just). Unfortunately, it clouded up during the crucial period but I did see one male just NE of the Monument just before the event, and as we were splitting up we were viciously attacked by a large dark butterfly hell bent on Demonic Malice - more of a sounding than a sighting as the click and swish of wings was very loud! Only one butterfly behaves like that in the UK...
The Bridgewater Monument offers canopy level viewing -
and must be visited again in more clement weather...
