Yes, it appears to be the 'proper start'; on the 8th, observations were made in Upper Thames region [Oxon], Warwicks, and Bookham Common, as well as in Tugley Wood. Looking at last year's Upper Thames records, it started at about the same time, but the numbers didn't really increase to any great extent until the 22nd July, but that was because of the poor weather until then.
This year it's different, because of the fine weather we can expect for the next 7 days at least, so maybe we'll all see numbers increasing quite quickly.
